Iphone App

Fri, 10 Apr '09 @ 9:35 AM
Well, someone had to ask :-). Is there any thoughts to an iPhone application? I would love to build one, but don't have the development expertise on staff. As always, thanks for a GREAT product.

UPDATE: From Dan @ WORKetc. To save everyone scrolling to the bottom, there is an update on the mobile app progress...

Hi - absolutely on the cards. iPhone is important to us from both a functionality and marketing opportunity. As is Blackberry.

We've been sourcing quotes from suppliers, but so far the costs are such that it is a better option for us to develop it inhouse. Ideal scenario would be to identify a programming platform where we can code once and then deploy to blackberry, iPhone and Windows mobile. Anyone seen anything like this?

Found this http://www.rhomobile.com/ with a quick Google search

Rhomobile's open source mobile application framework Rhodes lets you quickly build native mobile applications for all smartphone operating systems: iPhone, BlackBerry, Windows Mobile, Symbian and Android. These are true native device applications (not mobile web apps) which work with synchronized local data and take advantage of device capabilities such as GPS, PIM contacts and camera.

Any words on this? even any type of mobile app would be handy.

Hi David,

Still scoping this out and to be honest, looking for some direction in terms of which handset to develop first (iPhone, Blackberry or Windows Mobile OS) as well to try and understand whether a native app or a web front end delivered as an app is the best course of direction.

It is looking like the Windows Mobile OS will be the quickest option, although our distribution partners want to see a Blackberry app as their customer base is largely Berries. I have a hunch most of our direct customers are on iPhone.

It would be a limited tool set too - I doubt anyone would want to run complex report from their handsets, but definitely want to view contacts, calendars, enter timesheet data, update projects etc.

Let me know your thoughts,

Dan

Thanks Dan,

I would say iphone....but only because I'm bias :-).

I think the main thing in a mobile app would be to do the following:

ADD:
- Calanedar events
- todos
- timesheet data
View:
- contacts
- calendars (however, this is now done with the iphone very easily with the 3.0 software - I can simply subscribe to my calendars via the ical protocol)
- todos

Those are the main things. Currently, I have to add contacts to my address book and sync with my phone. I would like to keep all business contacts in WETC, so having an iphone app to accomplish that would be great.

Thanks, WETC is a great product.

I agree for the most part. I use safari on the iphone to currently browse my contacts and saved a shortcut to my desktop. The only thing is sometimes you cannot add comments, the box doesnt work.

Being able to view the contacts, and todos and monitor helpdesk tickets would be nice. A great feature would be push updates for new tickets.. :)

Hi David - when you say "A great feature would be push updates for new tickets.. :)" do you mean be able to respond to support tickets?
Tue, 8 Sep '09 @ 7:15 AM
For push updates I mean utilizing the push feature of the iphone similar to email push. When a new ticket is generated inworketc it automatically sends a call to the iphone worketc app and updates its status. Facebook, app updates, and many others do this now. I know its probably asking a lot, but its a nice feature.

Any app functionality would be nice, but I agree on the main features.

Lookup Contacts
Lookup, Respond, Open Helpdesk Tickets
Lookup Invoice
Apply Payments

Been following this thread with interest.

Think a mobile interface onto basic functionswould be a great start then perhaps a native app for the iPhone.

I agree with the comments made already, definitely concentrate on the messaging side of things and being able to manage support tickets would be great.

Count me in if you need beta testers for the iphone.

As with many other sites/applications, a native iPhone app beats a mobile browser version since a native app minimizes the effects of a slow connection (for those of us who live in EDGE areas). That said, based on the image shown (2-3 comments ago), I think that the main functions are nicely captured to enable us to swiftly respond to customers and prospects when away from the desktop - I am very willing to be a beta/alpha tester

Hi Dan

Wondered where this was at?

I'm shortly to buy an iPhone 4 and also an iPad and really looking at reading and updating my projects on the iPad when away from my main computer - in a lounge, airport, client site, etc.

I'm not interested in anything too flashy - a list of clients, projects, sub-projects, tasks, and a few other things, with the ability to quickly read and edit all is all that's needed.

Have you tried your website on the iphone or ipad? I would imagine due to the complex screens, it won't work with fingers rather than mice/keyboards.

My recommendation, if this has gone nowhere? Don't write an app but do a web interface that's device/resolution-specific. Big fat friendly buttons, areas hidden away that are not needed. It's quick to deliver, keeps one codebase for you and allows both endpoints to co-exist in one project.

Hi Mark - know anyone that might be interested in doing a mobile web interface?
Mon, 19 Jul '10 @ 11:51 PM
Hi Dan

I don't off-hand ... we're just hiring new developers here and other staff but I'm in the same boat as you when it comes to mobile web interfaces - I don't have anyone this minute and need to hire one within the next 4-5 months for another project.

I'll update this if I've found a resource and we can provide someone to you :-)

If resources are limited, it seems like a phone-friendly UI of the website would be the way to go.

I'm sure you'd learn some valuable lessons during development you could use when the time is right for a full on iphone/berry/droid application.

Buxfer.com has that type of function with an app or just a phone-friendly UI....and works very well.

Hi Sam - its not so much that resources are limited (and of course they're not unlimited!). Taking a direction on the mbile front is a bit of a leap of faith for us as we don't have any experience here. Plus our main focus is making the main application even better.

My preference is wherever possible, to work with WORKetc customers on building stuff. So a customer designed our web site and Nick who runs support used to be a customer as well. Ideally I'd like to find a WORKetc customer to partner on the mobile side.
Wed, 21 Jul '10 @ 7:01 PM
Yes. Without a killer solution and growing subscriber base it's all kinda academic.
I don't suppose WorkEtc is "perfect" but as far as I can tell it provides the best overall SAAS business management system available.
In the last couple weeks I've trolled through hundreds of search results, feature list, pricing and demos.

I guess my theory is you'd be able to implement a CSS based smartphone friendly UI with a substantially lower cost.
This would also give you the opportunity to explore and prioritize the mobile features and work flows that people really want.

Then, you could go to an app developer for any platform and say, "I want this functionality on this OS."

Hi Sam - thats a good strategy, although I'm still hoping one of our customers will come forward!

Thanks for the kind words ... although at times it feels like we still have a mountain to climb.

Hi everyone. Just doing a demo of the web based application, so far pretty great !!

iPhone is the app to make guys, just look at the traction both the iPhone AND iPad are getting !!

For me, I would require, estimates and integration with online banking to instantly lay bills and send wire transfers seamlessly.

Pretty please ????? I need this yesterday !!
Sun, 1 Aug '10 @ 1:04 PM
Holy cow Neil, you don't ask much....
We're discussing how to best enable the existing workEtc features on mobile platforms.

Real-time banking integration is a significant development challenge and expense from what I've heard from other banking application developers.
It is an awesome feature, that I LOVE, but please start a different thread to discuss this feature.
Sun, 1 Aug '10 @ 4:41 PM
Well one can dream of the perfect app !

Well I would need estimates and the ability to change them to invoices.

Thanks !!

I just wanted to bump this thread saying that I too am in serious need of a mobile application, preferably for the iPhone.
Tue, 5 Oct '10 @ 7:47 PM
Yep +1 for the Iphone...

I would really like a portable timer feature ;) Like the one in tools ...

Thu, 7 Oct '10 @ 8:44 AM
Add me to the list for an iPhone application or mobile web access.
I like the calendar sync with Google as this syncs with my iPhone, perhaps a sync with Google contacts?

I have to say that I didn't understand what all the FUSS was about with the mobile devices until I recently upgraded to a Droid 2 phone. I am completely blown away at what you can do with those things... :)

To have Work Etc accessible via my phone would be fantastic.
Sun, 19 Dec '10 @ 11:57 AM
Duane, welcome to the world of smart phones. They are life changing.
I've been pushing for a smart-phone web-based version of WEtc so you and everyone else who doesn't have an iphone can still capitalize on a mobile version.

I know people are hot to trot on an iphone app, but iphones are the only decent platforms out there....though I love mine.

Have you considered:

1) PhoneGap ( http://www.phonegap.com/ ) + Javascript framework like jQueryMobile or jQTouch

or

2) Appcelerator ( http://www.appcelerator.com/ )

or

3) monotouch ( http://monotouch.net/ ) create C# and .NET based applications that run on Apple's iPhone, iPad, and iPod Touch devices, while taking advantage of the iPhone APIs and reusing both code and libraries that have been built for .NET, as well as existing skills
+
monodroid
( http://monodroid.net/ ) development stack for using C# and core .NET APIs to develop Android-based applications

Added my vote. Our team has iPhone and Android and Blackberry :) I think the biggest things for us (as others have mentioned some but not all) would be those things particularly useful on the go:
  • Contacts (quick tool for adding new ones like from using Google Goggles to capture a business card - that would be sweet)
  • Calendar (quick tool to add a new event)
  • Quick tool to add Expenses (could be anywhere right)
  • Quick tool to start and save the timer for timesheets
  • Quick tool to attach a document to an item like a project

  • Probably lots more but those are the big ones that come to mind.

A GREAT example of taking a complex system and making it super efficient in a mobile app is WordPress. Highly recommend you check out that for ideas on interface and functionality. You can do almost everything in the mobile version that you can in the full web-based admin area, but everything is streamlined for mobile.

Thumbs up for a Blackberry App - much cheeper to run in an environment where internet connectivity is expensive or problematic for laptops.

My vote for a Blackberry app. @ Andrew, agree with the list of modules. Contacts would be the biggest thing for us. Ability to track phone calls, emails, add notes etc.
    Thanks,

Android is probably an easy route to take given the upcoming google integration with worketc....this will automatically sync contacts, calender and docs onto android devices. A good mobile web app should cover the rest.....the web page could then be expanded to support other platforms and features

We've just successfully completed a proof of concept on Android and mobile web access on iPhone:
    1) Log into an account
    2) Authorize credential
    3) Search for a WORKetc contact
    4) Display results
    5) Log out

What's the likelyhood of more work being done on the iPhone app now that you're looking at the iPad/Droid tablet apps? I'd like to use the iPhone app more, but it's a bit clunky still (as I think you pointed out in another post somewhere).
