New Dashboards

Sun, 26 Feb '12 @ 1:28 PM
Now that we have a few critical updates in place, we're in a position to start building the new, more-engaging dashboard.

The Dashboard should be one of the most important elements of WORKetc; it is the only part of the app that every user is guaranteed to see every day. But one of the universal problems of dashboards, regardless of application, is that over time every user will succumb to dashboard blindness. It stops being relevant and is no longer the starting point each day.

With this in mind, the new dashboard screen will allow for the following types of widgets:

  • Overview - basic numbers for a module. For example, the total number of open support cases
  • Detailed - list of items, such as 10 most recent invoices, or 10 most recent projects
  • Reports - anything that requires a calculation, such as “average time per support case” or “sales pipeline”, data is displayed in graphical format
  • Activities – any simple data entry tool. For example, Quick Timesheet Entry, or New Lead Entry

  • The layout on screen will be completely customizable, allowing for the placement and size of widgets to be dragged 'n dropped into place. The widgets that are the most important to you can be sized out to be the largest elements on screen:

One widget that would be very useful to me would be a "saved view" widget this would simply allow a user to display one of the new saved views within a widget on the dashboard. One result of this however is that we would need to be able to add multiple saved views if possible, for instance a custom task list and a custom project list.

For me and my team this would be hugely powerful as it would allow us to have anything we wanted on the dashboard including our custom fields.

    Hi Dan,
A feature we could use in our office is an IN/OUT of office widget on the dashboard. If people are in a meeting room, their phones still buzz when others try to put a call through to them. It would be very handy to look at the dashboard and tell the caller that herp and derp were unavailable.

Additionally if there was a dropdown to choose from of the possible places a person could be. for example, Board Room, Out to Lunch, Design Studio, Second Office, etc.

    Dan,

Are you going to be updating both the customer dashboard and the internal dashboard?

    Exciting ideas for customer Dashboard:

Easy to see and bright account balance with overdue balance highlighted (or make a pop up that they have to dismiss if they are overdue)
Ability for customer to update their contact information with an occassional pop up reminder
Quick access to open support tickets with fast access for customer to enter an updated
Quick way for customer to create a new support case
Ability for customer to close a ticket or mark "Resolved"
**** COOL!!!! ****** Have a widget in our DASHBOARD (or other area) that shows when any customer logs into their account and even where they went when they logged in
Customizable pop up reminders for customers and employees that they have to dismiss when the login

    Exciting ideas for internal Dashboard:

Widget that shows what customers logged in today and this week (optional) along with where they went in work etc
Quick graph of Income, expenses and profit / Loss for month & year
Quick display of overdue invoices and how long overdue
Quick timesheet entry with default increments such as 5 mins, 10 mins, 15 mins for easy selection and a notes box for work done notes
Ability to set pop up reminder for any customer or employee when they login
Ability to filter support cases based on status, due date, priority etc
Quickly tell me if there is a support case that the customer hasn't received a reply yet

These are just off the top of my head... I am sure I have more. :)

Thanks for listening to us so well!

Great! I was just playing around with the dashboard yesterday thinking it needs improving. Currently I can't seem to move drag and drop panels around properly - it seems to be better in Firefox than Chrome. Could be my machine.

It would be great to be able to have 3 or more columns - good for larger monitors. I'd like to have lists/reports in the first two, and then timesheet and other input quick entry widgets in the right hand, third column.

The big numbers you've shown - are these just placeholders or what you're actually planninig to display? If they are, will they have a pop up list or something when you hover over them - as just numbers on their own, taking up so much space, is of limited value.

Something else that would be nice is the ability to customise the look more - especially the customer facing parts. Just being able to customise the header and the sign on screens would make a big difference. Perhaps this would simply be having a separate header logo and form logos. The header logo could be any size you want, plus you could set a header background colour. This would enables you to change the look quite a lot with quite a simple change. For instance Campaign Monitor allows you to upload a welcome/login screen logo which looks pretty pro... see image attached:

This brings up another thought - small thing, but it would be cool if you could lock the size of the header logo, so you could change the browser zoom level and the logo wouldn't go all big and fuzzy. Just a thought. I have a 1920x1080 laptop screen, so I have to make the text bigger in WORKetc to be able to read it - but then our company logo looks a bit shoddy.

This looks VERY GOOD. Is there anyway to beta test it at this point or any idea about when it will be deployed?

I think administrators need special dashboards that show global (goal) numbers. Ie. total sales stats, total finance stats

I think the suggestion of administrators having a special dashboard is a great idea.

I would like to see a list of upcoming events. Perhaps the system could look across all calendars and list the next 10 events.

Comps look awesome. Would be great to see trends e.g. ave time support cases are open, how often projects are running on time, on budget, length of sales cycle
    Mon, 21 May '12 @ 5:20 PM
Hi, all these new features look great if you are doing sales and ticket management.
But don't ignore projects. It would be great to see improved flexibility regarding how to-dos and projects
are displayed. The current display of projects includes archived projects, which is clearly a bug.
A widget that provided to-dos with flexibility on how they are ordered would be useful. For example
a list of to-do's on their own are not particularly useful. We have 100's a projects that have the same structure so there
are multiple to-dos with same name. Having the option to order these by client or project number (or both) etc. would make
    this much more useful.

The same display options should also be available under the /Work / To-do list menu.

    Cheers Phillip

has this already been rolled out?

I was wondering if no one has asked for a google chat like box, so you can chat with important co-workers or a activity sharing ability, like a facebook/yammer/podio etc etc bar, where you can just tell people what you are doing or share a link

    Thanks

    Hi Dan,

Love the mockup. Couple of questions / suggestions. Would love to see the "sales pipeline" funnel as a widget (interactive of course). Also, the big one, how far away do you think this is (even if only to beta)?

@Florian - yes we're building an internal Chat/Social feature with the espressed goal of taking all "chat-like / quick question" communication out of email and capturing this info inside of WORK[etc].

@Blare - I want to get the sales pipeline in as a widget, but will probably have to have a fixed size on the display because of detail of information required.

Any update on when we'll see the new dashboard design?

    Hi Dan,

I love the look of the widgets. Do we have a time frame for a beta testing to be released?

Also, just wanted to find out. In regaurds to having several 'counters' on the widget. Will clicking a specific 'counter' take you to the page and filter to just these results?

    Thanks,
    Brad

From my point of view, the remedy to dashboard blindness is data integration: I need to make sure I can overview all my data.

That´s why I would suggest the capability to integrate non-Worketc data to the Worketc dashboard (through a simple csv file import and scheduled refresh) and then to build a custom widget out of these data. Or maybe a custom widget with the capability to embed some html or javascript code in it (so you could integrate with BI vendors softwares that support this embed feature, like Klipfolio for instance).

    Thanks,
    Marc

    Hi Bill,

Not at all. We did make a decision to engage an enterprise-level business analytic firm to provide the reporting.

Bottom line is that this group are experts in this field and WORK[etc] isn't. And of course we wanted to make the best solution available.

There will be a blog post updating this sometime in April (as we get closer to deployment). This also refreshes reporting in WORK[etc].
