iPad & Android Tablets - Ideas

Sun, 19 Feb '12 @ 2:48 PM
We're looking at a specific tablet strategy - going all out on discrete, fully-native, versions of WORKetc designed especially for the iPad and Android Tablets. Slick UX, great performance.

So, last year we released first versions of both the iPhone and Android apps. They work ok, but I admit they aren't awesome. The main issue is the smaller screen size and great variance between individuals network speeds and handset performance. Some people love them, some people struggle. Android users seem to far outnumber iPhone users.

Tablets address these issues with their larger screens and generally more grunt. They're more accessible and mobile than a desktop and definitely kinda cool when out in the field.

Furthermore - this May 2011 Study suggest 78% of enterprises plan on deploying tablets to their workforce by 2013. We also just received a request to develop for Cisco's new Cius Tablet.

Considering all this I'm looking for ideas and comments around:

Do you see yourself and your team being large tablet users? Android or iPad?
What are some great tablet-specific user interfaces or apps that you have seen?
Do you know any experienced Android/iPad UX designers & developers interested in working with us?

Based on the Apps i have used, Zendesk.com has the best use of iPad screen real estate.

Why not just make a "mobile" site instead of managing apps? Mobile site is much cheaper and you don't have to worry about platforms.

@Canyon - we already have a mobile (CSS) site, but performance is the issue plus you really are limited in terms of UX

Developing iPad and Android apps is a great idea, using iPads could bypass issues we have around our problematic IT systems!

I would love to see a native iPad app. Currently I am using the Dolphin browser and get to wetc that way. I have the wetc app installed on both my Android phone (Droid2) and iPhone 4s. But because the App doesn't provide access to Comments, which as an IT consultant is where I store a lot of information for each client it hasn't proven very useful.

I use the mobile app quite a bit, simply for quick info; however, we see ourselves and quite a few of our customers going to the 7' - 10.5" Android tablets. You may be able to keep the development time down, and keep focusing on the SaaS capabilities by simply adapting to the browser (if needed). My favorite use of the tablet is either through the native browser (w/SSL), or secure RDP to either a desktop internal to our network, or through RDP/Zen environments. Thanks for all you do with this app, and for the passion you do it with. It's been a great asset to our business.

We use Android phones and tablets, but are only willing to use the full web interface because so many features are not implemented in the Apps/mobile web themselves.

So a full functioning tablet/phone mobile web experience or tablet app would expand our usage of WORKetc and our overall productivity.

Project Management (Activity, Budgets, People, Updates), Billing (Invoicing, receiving payments, notes), Sales Pipeline Management (comments, todo's, quotes, invoices, updates, email response) and Comments are the features I use most in the field.

I am a micro business and use an iPad most of the time when I meet with clients. I presently use the full interface but it is clumsy with a touch screen. I would love to see full functionality available in an iPad specific app.

The way I was able to solve this issue on my own platforms, was a responsive design, such as: http://foundation.zurb.com (rapid prototyp framework, not just another boiler template) or http://twitter.github.com/bootstrap/ automatically making several columns into one column to scroll on mobile. Some math is involved of course.
The table strategy is important, but a serious CRM with a good mobile UI is quite important. With a good responsive and adaptive design, the gap between tablet and smartphone should not be that big.
To see notes/history related to a company or contact is what everybody expects today. Of course I am spoiled as a former Salesforce, ZohoCrm and Maximizer user. A field salesperson needs much more info on the smarthpone right away, a project consultant could get along easily with a tablet. Sales reps are used to Blackberrys and/or Salesforce mobile, working with an excellent hybrid solution off/online sync. Hopefully future developments will bring WORKetc closer to such performance needed soon.

I would love to use the full version on my tablet (purchased a tablet for this reason) and then found that it was really hard...for example, if you are shooting off an email to a customer, the dialog box opens but the keyboard rises up over the dialog box so you cannot see what you're typing without backing out of it. Also, a lot of times the tablet doesn't know where to place the text within certain field forms.

Anything that requires a hover to get a function is very cumbersome with the tablet

Very Simple.

I have implemented tablets in companies since the venue of the iPad 1 in 2010, mostly pharmaceutical companies. Which team? SALES!
From my opinion, best tablets app out there are the ones who store the CRM data internally, that can be edited offline and be synced when the salesperson who's generally on the road hit back an internet connection.
This way companies can implement wifi-only tablets which make the cost of implementation (from 100-300$ for very good Android Tablets) very affordable.

Hope this help!

I know your are working on the Android versions right now and I think rolling out the CRM part of your app should be high priority!

I think windows 8 is going to bring a lot change to the tablet strategy. Certainly easier to port from existing worketc interface....I am really interested in the microsoft surface pro as my mobile computing device paired with my galaxy nexus.

Your current iOS app is awful. I barely can do any useful thing. it's very slow too. Hopefully you're not following your iPhone footsteps. and maybe you can share codebase and make a native iPhone app not a year from now.

Mobile is future, and you're lacking behind already. I'm sure you get many new customers with an elegant app.

@Haddi - completely rebuilt, 100% native iphone app is maybe 3 weeks from beta. There'll be a blog post about it in the meantime (not that I don't agree with your statement that it is "completely useless"

@Dave - we'll be watching Windows 8 tablet adoption closely.

@Guillaume - there'll be some amount of local caching.

@Scott - the just released new interface for WORK[etc] is a whole lot easier to use on the tablet format

We use iPads extensively here. and there are two cloud apps that don't work well with iPad safari that is really impacting our workflow - WorkEtc and Google AdWords.

Can't wait for you to make an app available for iPad.

and I agree with your initial post - it has to be much more robust than the iPhone app. Love that you recognized that already.

We are a completely paperless firm, but the lack of a native iPad app has made management of our client base very difficult while in the field.

We all have iPads, and while the web-based version is usable on the iPad, a tablet experience is so radically different from a desk/laptop experience that a native app will be a BIG improvement to the way we work.

Currently, we take notes in the field in a mishmash of apps (Evernote, Simplenote, Email, etc.) and then copy/paste into WORKetc. Not ideal, but it's worked. And while we've experimented with the Evernote integration, it's not seamless, so we stick with the tried-and-true copy/paste.

The biggest thing we've noticed is that we don't bill nearly as much time because time-logging isn't an elegant experience on the mobile or tablet (or the web version for that matter). While not a big concern for project-pricing firms, without the ability to easily log hourly time, we miss out on some revenue.

Looking forward to checking out the new mobile app. I hope you used Sencha Touch as the framework. I see the existing one uses jQuery Mobile and you were not too happy with the performance. I've been working with Sencha Touch for a while now and wrapping it up with PhoneGap and I think it's quite a bit better than jQuery Mobile.

I think time tracking and todo lists are the most important part of a phone app where complete project visibility and dashboards would be better on a tablet.

We would absolutely use the iPad version. I tired your iphone version on the ipad but it really doesn't translate well.
