Upload file Custom field disappears

I like the idea of the custom field that is a link to a file - it would allow us to see that file within "Issued Invoices" for example. And it seems to work at first.

I can upload the file and it shows up as that field:



It shows up also in Activity, but then if other changes are made to the invoice and saved, the link goes away:



Ideally, this field should show up in Issued Invoices, and it works at first, but then, again disappears when further changes are made to the invoice:



If the intent of this field is just to upload a file to the parent object, then it seems there's not much point, because I can do that from "Create New... File". I assume the intent is to have that file link available within that custom field group and by extension, any other view of it. Am I wrong?
